On Saturday 8th November 2008 at 7.30pm, the eve of Remembrance Sunday, also the eve of the 70th anniversary of Kristallnacht, Sheffield Oratorio Chorus are performing a concert in Remembrance which features both the Faure Requiem and Tippett’s ‘A Child of Our Time’.
Tippetts deeply moving work, inspired by the dreadful events in Nazi Germany on 9/10 November 1938, is more than a narrative piece. It explores the depth of human suffering and the nature of the evil faced by people of all faiths and ethnicities across the world. In ‘Child of Our Time’, Tippett tries to make some sense of man’s capacity for violence, war and persecution and offers hope for the future of humanity.
The concert is accompanied by an exhibition from Nov.1st to Nov. 8th, at the back of the cathedral, including archive materials from Sheffield papers that document the shocked response in Sheffield to events in Germany on November 9th 1938, and also features the part Sheffield has played in supporting those seeking sanctuary historically and at the present time.
(Tickets for the concert from Chorus members, Blue Moon Cafe (0114 276 3443), Calow Classics (0114 255 3440) or at the door. - students £5.00 on the door only)
